Molecular Biology and Evolution

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

The Master study program in Molecular Biology and Evolution (MAMBE) combines the areas of evolution and molecular biology, a combination that has emerged as an extremely successful interdisciplinary research field in last decade. MAMBE is an international program, taught entirely in English, and it is based on a collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön. The program also collaborates with the Leibniz Science Campus EvoLUNG (Evolutionary Medicine of the Lung), the Collaborative Research Centre 1182 (Origin and Function of Metaorganisms), and the graduate school TransEvo (Translational evolution), fostering interdisciplinary research and scientific collaborations. The curriculum is centered around practical research experience gained through multiple research internships and a master thesis. The program structure includes: first two semesters learning current topics in evolutionary and molecular biology, enhancing skills in biological data analysis (e.g., genomics and biostatistics) and scientific communication; third semester applying acquired competences to hands-on research in the laboratory and field; fourth semester dedicated to the Master thesis research. Graduates are prepared for doctoral studies in interdisciplinary biological research fields or careers in industry, small companies or governmental organizations in fields like research and development, service sector, or governmental sector.
