Ocean and Climate Physics

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

The MSc program Ocean and Climate Physics is taught in English and equips students with profound knowledge in ocean and climate physics. The program focuses on the physics of both the ocean and the climate system, covering fluid dynamics, large-scale dynamics, waves and turbulence, and climate processes varying on different temporal and spatial scales. The four-semester program consists of: Semester 1 (winter): ocean circulation, processes and observations; Semester 2 (summer): waves, turbulence, climate modeling and dynamics; Semester 3 (winter): specialization and project planning; Semester 4 (summer): master's thesis and presentation. The Institute of Oceanography is part of Universität Hamburg's KlimaCampus and the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN), offering optimal conditions for research-oriented studies with close cooperation with the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology. Graduates are particularly prepared for careers in oceanic and climate research, as well as positions in computing, large data processing, and consulting.
