Master of Science (M.Sc.)

About the Program

The Master's program in Physics deepens the understanding of central concepts and laws of modern physics, further develops experimental and theoretical methods, and introduces students to current physical research. Students acquire the ability to think and work scientifically independently and are enabled to make scientifically sound contributions in their future professional field. Graduates can present physical facts, critically classify scientific questions, and work with modern experimental and theoretical methods. Besides deepening general physical knowledge in advanced experimental and theoretical courses, students can initially start with two physical specialties. Currently, specialties are offered in three areas: Plasma Physics, Atomic and Solid State Physics (Quantum Physics), and Soft Matter, Bio and Environmental Physics, Medical Physics. In the second semester, students choose one of the two specialties and complete a laboratory internship in the research groups, where they are introduced to current research topics. The Master's thesis is written in the chosen field, with planning, preparation, and implementation spanning two semesters, culminating in a defense colloquium.
